VoltPro designs electrical installations for projects throughout the Republic of Ireland to I.S. 10101, the National Rules for Electrical Installations published by NSAI, rather than the UK's BS 7671. One design team for projects on both sides of the border.
Design, supply applications and compliance support for developers, contractors, businesses and landlords across Ireland.
Complete electrical designs for residential, commercial and industrial projects, prepared to the current National Rules for Electrical Installations.
The Republic of Ireland version of our NIE supply service: we work out the Maximum Import Capacity you need and prepare the technical side of your ESB Networks application.
Charge point design for homes, apartment blocks, workplaces and car parks to I.S. 10101 Part 722, which was revised in the 2024 amendment.
Independent reviews of existing installations, certificates and periodic inspection reports against I.S. 10101, with clear, prioritised recommendations.
What clients and contractors should know about designing and building to Ireland's National Rules for Electrical Installations.
I.S. 10101 sets the requirements for the design, erection and verification of low-voltage electrical installations in Ireland. It is published by the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) and replaced the previous rules, ET 101:2008.
It shares its international foundations with BS 7671 but is a separate standard with Irish-specific requirements, so a design produced to BS 7671 for Northern Ireland needs to be checked against I.S. 10101 before it's used south of the border.
Amendment A1:2024 added Part 718 (communal facilities and workplaces), revised Part 722 (supplies for electric vehicles) and turned the energy efficiency annex into a new Chapter 8, including prosumer installations such as solar PV with battery storage.
NSAI's current consolidated version is I.S. 10101:2020+AC2:2025, which includes a 2025 corrigendum. We design to the current edition.
Under the Electricity Regulation Act 1999 (as amended), restricted electrical works in the Republic of Ireland can only be carried out and certified by a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) under the Safe Electric scheme, which is regulated by the CRU. The REC must issue a Completion Certificate for electrical works other than minor works, once the work is installed and tested.
ESB Networks will only connect a new installation once a validated completion certificate has reached it through Safe Electric.
VoltPro provides the design, calculations and documentation. Your REC installs, tests and certifies the installation and submits the completion certificate. A clear I.S. 10101 design makes their job, and the certification, more straightforward.
| Topic | Northern Ireland / UK | Republic of Ireland |
|---|---|---|
| Wiring standard | BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) | I.S. 10101 (NSAI National Rules for Electrical Installations) |
| Network operator | NIE Networks | ESB Networks |
| Earthing | PME (TN-C-S) supplies are common; the network provides the earth terminal | TN-C-S is the standard for new ESB Networks LV connections, with one neutralโearth connection point at the main supply point and an earthing conductor from the main earthing terminal to the installation's own earth electrode |
| Protection | RCD and AFDD requirements set by BS 7671 | I.S. 10101 requires RCD protection on lighting circuits in homes and recommends AFDDs for circuits in locations with particular fire risk |
| Certification | BS 7671 certificates and reports (EIC, MEIWC, EICR) | Safe Electric Completion Certificates issued by a Registered Electrical Contractor; periodic inspection reports under Chapter 6 of I.S. 10101 |
| Rented homes | NI: inspection and test at least every five years under the 2024 private tenancy regulations; HMOs licensed under the HMO Act (NI) 2016 | Housing (Standards for Rented Houses) Regulations 2019: electricity installations kept safe and in good repair; fire detection and alarm system and fire blanket; emergency lighting in common areas of multi-unit buildings. Enforced by local authorities |
